The purpose of this study is to explore children's understanding of Tomi Ungerer. The reading responses of Ungerer’s four picture books "The Best Snake in the World", "Grandpa Xin's Monster", "The Little Girl and the Troll", and "The Three Robbers", using qualitative method and one-on-one storytelling to collect the data. A study was conducted on 6 senior children in the class. Selecting and exploring children's reading responses, the study found responses based on the literary elements of picture books, including characters, themes, plots, illustrations and overall views. The results of the study are as follows:
1. Response to character reading: Young children show a significant preference for characters that display positive moral traits, which reflects their high identification with courage, justice and good deeds. The character's moral transformation, especially from negative to positive, profoundly affects young children and strengthens their emotional investment in the story and their moral learning.
2. Theme reading response: Children's response to the theme of the story shows how they form norms for social interaction and moral behavior through stories. In this process, their personal experience and cultural background played a key role in interpreting the theme, emphasizing that educational content should take into account cultural and individual differences.
3. Plot reading response: The tension and adventure elements in the storyline can significantly attract children's attention and stimulate their curiosity and sense of justice. In addition, humor and unexpected twists in the plot can effectively stimulate children's imagination and emotional responses, enhancing their overall experience of the story.
4. Response to reading illustrations: The visual presentation of illustrations is crucial to enhancing the appeal and educational effect of the story. Young children demonstrate a sensitive perception of color, shape and layout in illustrations.
5. Overall view: Children’s views on Tommy. Ungerer's picture books show strong reactions, paying special attention to the emotional and behavioral changes of the characters, emphasizing the moral value and authenticity of the story. They show a marked interest in fun and novel elements and a sensitive response to horror elements in stories.
Finally, suggestions are made based on the research conclusions for reference by teachers, parents and future researchers.
