A number of researches indicate that drawings are evaluated as a possible assessment tool for research on emotion recognition and interpretation involving young children. Adopting the method of case study, the research aims at analyzing diary drawings (N=160) of five-year old preschoolers (N=4) in a day care center in Taipei city to find out emotion expressiveness of these young children. This research purpose is followed by two steps of data processing, qualitative analysis (nominal category) and quantitative analysis (exact test). Also, the reliability of the evaluations made by different evaluators is examined and show a highly significant consistency (p<.05). Finally, the results shows
1. There is no significant difference between genders in children's diary drawings.
2. Color usage is found significant to interpret children's emotional state, either positive or negative.
3. Traces are also found useful to gain children’s emotional pictorial.
4. Figures of drawings are seen as life experiences and reflections for young children.
Overall, the findings suggest diary drawings can be a helpful tool to assess children's nonverbal world, emotion recognition and interpretation in particular.
