Maternal separation anxiety is a construct that describes a mother's experience of worry, stress, and feeling guilty during short-term separation from her child. One of the major purpose of this study was to revise Maternal Separation Anxiety Scale(MSAS ; made by Hock, McBride and Gnezda, 1989) and evaluated its suitability in Taiwan. Another purpose of this study was to explore the individual differences of mother's anxiety facing with her child's going to be a preschooler for the first time.
151 mothers with first experience of their child to be a preschooler participated as the subjects of this research. They had completed MSAS and done self-reports about short-term separation from their child when their child left them to daycare centers or kindergartens. Cronbach's coefficient alpha and factor analysis showed consistent results between U.S.A. and Taiwan about maternal separation anxiety. Mother's residential area presented maternal perception of separation effects on the child and the employment hours presented employment-related separation concerns. Another factor concluded from the mothers’ self-reports, which was different from the Western family education culture, was the conflict of demanding homework assignment for preparing their child entering the primary school in Taiwan.

Associated factors such as child's birth order, mother's age, mother's education background were not related with the scale of maternal separation anxiety. Study findings were discussed on the issue of cultural differences. It suggests that MASA can be used for maternal separation anxiety's researches and parent-education in Taiwan, as well as the Chinese parents' attitude toward the demand of homework.
