Background:Organ donation, which reflects a commitment to altruism and social responsibility,is integral to numerous life-saving medical procedures. The willingness of medical staff on the front lines to donate their organs warrants greater attention,as it influences not only their own decisions but also broader societal acceptance of organ donation by setting a positive example. Therefore, examining their current levels of organ donation knowledge and other factors can contribute to a better understanding of the key drivers of organ donation behavior.
Objective:To survey medical staff at a hospital in order to examine the relationships between knowledge of organ donation, attitudes toward organ donation, and willingness to donate organs.
Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted using convenience sampling to survey medical staff at a hospital in Yilan,Taiwan.A total of 86 responses were collected. The research instrument was the Organ Donation Scale developed by Lai-Chu See (1998),which measures three dimensions:knowledge, attitude, and willingness.Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0,applying descriptive statistics, t-tests,one-way ANOVA,Pearson correlation, and multiple logistic regression to assess relationships among variables and their predictive power.
Results:Participants had an average knowledge accuracy rate of 6.3.The mean attitude score was 62.9,indicating generally positive views toward organ donation. However, only 38.4% of respondents expressed a willingness to donate.A significantly positive correlation was found between knowledge and attitude(r=0.276,p=0.011).Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that, after adjusting for demographic variables,attitude(B=0.054,p=0.0007,OR=1.055),previous exposure to information about organ donation(B=1.225,p=0.027,OR=3.403),and prior personal experience related to organ donation(B=1.680,p=0.034,OR=5.367) were significant predictors of willingness to donate.
Conclusion:While medical staff demonstrated moderately high levels of knowledge and generally positive attitudes toward organ donation, the proportion who expressed a willingness to donate remained relatively low. This suggests that knowledge and attitude alone may not directly translate into action.Attitude was found to be a significant predictor of willingness, highlighting its pivotal role in shaping behavioral intention. Future efforts should focus on enhancing frontline medical workers’ education and in-service training related to organ donation, fostering supportive attitudes, and incorporating culturally sensitive communication and family engagement strategies to promote donation behavior.
