In recent years, with the rise of health awareness, the public’s demand for physical activity has continued to increase, making fitness centers important venues for promoting physical and mental health as well as expanding social interactions. However, integrated research on health behavior self-efficacy, exercise well-being, and interpersonal relation-ships remains limited, highlighting the need for further investigation. This study aimed to examine the influence of health behavior self-efficacy on exercise well-being and inter-personal relationships among fitness center members. The research was grounded in the Self-Efficacy Theory (SET) and the Health Promotion Model (HPM), from which a comprehensive framework was developed and empirically tested.
A questionnaire survey was conducted, yielding a total of 361 valid responses. The results revealed the following: (1) background variables such as age, weekly exercise frequency, and duration per session significantly affected all three major constructs; (2) within the dimensions of health behavior self-efficacy, health responsibility and nutrition were significant positive predictors of exercise well-being; (3) among the self-efficacy components, only exercise significantly predicted interpersonal relationships; (4) the exercise enjoyment dimension of exercise well-being significantly predicted interpersonal relationships, suggesting that health behavior self-efficacy may indirectly influence interpersonal relationships through exercise well-being, reflecting a positive psychological process; (5) interpersonal relationships showed limited predictive power on exercise well-being, with only the coach dimension reaching statistical significance, underscoring the critical supportive role of coaches in the fitness context.
Overall, the findings validate the application potential of SET and HPM in the fitness setting and help bridge theoretical gaps between health behavior and social connection. In practice, it is recommended that fitness center operators develop tailored programs, enhance educational interventions on nutrition and health responsibility, and strengthen the social support function of coaches throughout the exercise experience to enhance members’ exercise well-being and interpersonal quality, thereby promoting the sustainable practice of health behaviors and improving service effectiveness.
