With the gradual development of the Internet, the use of the Internet has become more and more frequent, but long-term use of the Internet without proper rest can lead to Internet addiction, which affects the quality of sleep and life. Previous studies have found that Internet addiction affects the quality of sleep, but most of them have only explored the relationship between Internet addiction and the quality of sleep and have not addressed the issue of physical and mental health, therefore, this study will use the results of previous studies as the basis for the study, aiming to explore the relationship between Internet addiction, quality of sleep and physical and mental health. Therefore, this study is based on previous research findings and aims to investigate the relationship between Internet addiction, sleep quality, and physical and mental health. The Chen's Internet Addiction Scale (CIAS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Brief Symptom Rating Scale (BSRS-5) were used as the research tools to understand the relationship between Internet addiction, sleep quality, and physical and mental health of university students in Taiwan.412
questionnaires were sent out, and 386 valid questionnaires were returned.
The results showed that (1) students in the College of Arts and Humanities exhibited significantly more severe internet addiction compared to other colleges, (2) third-grade students had significantly more severe internet addiction than students in other years, (3) females had significantly poorer sleep quality than males, (4) students in the College of Communication had significantly poorer sleep quality and physical and mental health compared to other colleges, (5) senior students had poorer mental health, and (6) all variables were significantly positively correlated. Furthermore, internet addiction influenced mental health through sleep quality, with sleep quality serving as a mediating factor. Due to limitations in manpower and funding, this study distributed the survey randomly online via Google Forms, resulting in uneven sample proportions across some background variables and a lack of representativeness. Future research is recommended to use stratified sampling to increase representativeness. Additionally, it is suggested that governments, schools, and parents pay more attention to students' internet use to prevent internet addiction, and promote diverse career talks and psychological counseling to care for students' mental and physical health.
