Background: Studies have shown that nursing preceptors can help new nurses adapt to clinical work and transform their role from that of nursing students into that of registered nurses.
Purpose: To understand nursing preceptors’ experiences of providing guidance to new nurses.
Method: A qualitative research method and convenience sampling were adopted to gather cases from three specific teaching hospitals located in northern Taiwan. One-on-one in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 participating nursing preceptors based on the guidelines for semi-structured interviews. Verbatim recordings were then analyzed using the content analysis method.
Findings: The experiences of nursing preceptors providing guidance to new nurses could be summarized under the two themes of positive and negative effects.
Conclusion: The findings of this study can be used as a reference for designing a future education curriculum for preceptors and are of important reference value for the training of future preceptors.
