This research intends to understand indoor plants’ adjustment functions in regard to the oxygen and carbon dioxide condensations and, through testing a variety of different plants, to learn about indoor density of carbon dioxide.
1.This study immediately measured the density of carbon dioxide following placing plants indoors, and found that the average was about 537.5 (14.1) ppm, similar to the value 539.1(11.9) ppm reported in Kuo’s (2009) study which measured the four-hour carbon dioxide density in an unoccupied office.
2.The research showed that, after placing the plants indoors for an hour, the average density of carbon dioxide would reach a certain value. This value equaled Kuo’s (2009) previous study which measured the average density of morning carbon dioxide in a park. Some plants even showed averages lower than this value, which indicated that plants were indeed
able to reduce indoor carbon dioxide density.
3.After a period of 8 hours in an unoccupied room, the plants which reduced the average density of carbon dioxide more included: Chlorophytum comosumspider,Cyathea lepifera, Dieffenbachia macultat, Nephrolepis exaltata, Davallia mariesii, Sansevieria laurentii, Rohdea japonica and Chrysalidocarpus lutescens; the plants which reduced the average density of carbon dioxide less included: Peperomia obtusifolia, Blechnum gibbum,
Dracaena deremensis, Euphobia tirucalli Linn and Anthurium andreanum. A factor analysis of variance between the various groups of plants suggested significant differences, with various plants examined by Scheffe ex-post analysis also showing significant differences between the groups.
4.Before putting plants into the tested rooms, the density of carbon dioxide was below the EPA of the Executive Yuan's announced "Indoor environment quality recommended value," 600ppm.
